JOSELYN CHIMBO (b.2007) is an Ecuadorian-American artist based in New York and a BFA candidate at Cooper Union. She works across media such as sculpture, painting, drawing, photography, and installation. Topics such as memory, intergenerational trauma, and cultural inheritance are all explored through her pieces as shaped by an Ecuadorian background; she closely examines mestizaje, Catholicism, and the loss of indigenous languages and traditions. Through materials such as wood, plaster, copper, textiles, and photo transfers, Chimbo researches and investigates how both personal and collective history can be altered, carried, and remembered amongst her community. Her practice is immersed in experimentation and material processes that question how identity can be shaped by what is forgotten as well as by what is preserved. In response, she creates works that invite viewers to reflect on belonging, ancestry, and the lingering influence of the past.
