Diablo Huma
This sculpture is a contemporary interpretation of Diablo Huma, the dual-faced spirit of Andean folklore who guards the balance between chaos and order. Drawing from Ecuadorian indigenous traditions, Diablo Huma is a symbol of resistance, wisdom, and festivity—often appearing in Inti Raymi celebrations to honor the sun and ancestral cycles.
The textured surface mimics woven fabrics and earth, echoing the handmade masks and rituals of highland cultures. The exaggerated features and asymmetry reflect the energy of transformation, while the hollow eyes invite viewers to confront the unseen spirits, memory, and the stories that shape identity.
In this work, Diablo Huma is not a demon, but a complex spirit—playful and haunting, ancestral and ever-evolving.
