The green card is a significant milestone worth celebrating, representing years of paperwork and the benefits that come with it. It guarantees permanent residency, which for many individuals means the assurance of not being deported back to their home country. In my project, I used a red hat, reminiscent of the MAGA Trump hat, to create a form of identification. In this altered context, rather than celebrating the achievement of receiving a green card, it is viewed as something negative, leading to social ostracization. People are compelled to display their identification through their clothing at all times. I personalized this hat by sewing in my information to illustrate what identification might look like in this new social setting. It is seen as a bad object to obtain and makes you subject to ostracization. You are forced to show your identification at all times through your clothing. I sewed in my information to personalize this hat to me to show what the identification would look like in this new public context.
